The originals were celebrations of the luxury and refinement of Persian life and culture. Our revival of these ancient covers depicts roses primed on a gold base, surrounded by smaller flowers such as might have been found in the botanical gardens of the Persian court. In a more regal presentation such as "Glowing Rose," the rose takes her rightful place as the focal point. She is surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting: poppies, carnations, dogwood and tulips, and her nobility and pride draw the eye. In contrast,"Wild Rose" is a modest and stylised depiction of her beauty, subtly enhanced by the play of light and shadow.

William Morris - Decorative Naturalist

William Morris (1834-1896) was one of the most celebrated practitioners of the Arts and Crafts Movement. He embraced the ideal of craftspeople taking pride in their personal handiwork, as opposed to the dehumanising onslaught of the Industrial Revolution. In creating woven and printed textile patterns (only one area expressed by his remarkable talents), Morris chose to work with the ancient technique of hand woodblock printing. He famously said that any decoration is futile when it does not remind you of something beyond itself. He sought inspiration for his famous repeating patterns from the natural world around him, mille-fleurs tapestries and early prints of herbs as well as the crispness and abundance of exquisite detail in mediæval art. His evocations of antique florals and plants in all their profusion, depth of tone and magical gradation of tints have become design classics gracing the decorative arts, including our journal covers.

What style could be more à propos to grace the covers of these journals than the lavish designs of France in the 1920s and ‘30s? Bridging the gap between fine art and everyday objects, the Art Deco movement left behind the manifestos and politically charged notions of its early 20th century counterparts in favor of a purely decorative luxury.
