These offer a wide range of options on various surfaces. The oil pastels can easily be wiped to produce an unlimited number of intermediate hues and transitions: you can use a piece of cloth or even a finger. You can achieve effects similar to oil painting tempera or even watercolours. Oil pastels are also suitable for encaustic and graffiti techniques.
